‘Why Colonel Pete and not Wally?’
Record Searchlight, Editorial, Tuesday, January 19, 2010
Pete Stiglich, who’s challenging the 2nd District’s longtime incumbent congressman, Wally Herger, in the Republican primary, explains the core of his candidacy. Here, I think, is the nut:
His repeated selection by Roll Call, the newspaper of Capitol Hill since 1955, as one of Congress’ most obscure representatives in 1994 and 2007, as well as in 2003 when he received its Lifetime Obscure Caucus Achievement Award, does not bode well for the North State. Folks, it’s time for a more visibly working representative and leader in Congress. Obscurity is unacceptable and does not favor the conservative cause during these most challenging and difficult times. To think otherwise is foolish.
Similarly, simply bashing the President, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and democrats in general won’t work either. Likewise, the fine art of jumping on bandwagons of popular opinion, when convenient to do so, doesn’t work. Lord knows, most clear thinking conservatives can easily see through such sleight of hand.
And on some specifics:
Wally Herger voted in favor of the $700B TARP bail-out. I would not have supported this bill.
Wally Herger voted in favor of the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug entitlement, adding an $8T unfunded entitlement to the national debt your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will be forced to pay. I would not have supported this bill.
Wally Herger voted in favor of the budget-busting, pork-laden budgets of the Bush years. I would not have supported these bills. We must draw a line in the sand and say enough is enough.
